rdrossan is a small castle on the coast of Kyle, perched on a rocky hill above a village of the same name. It is the seat of Clan Barclay, of whom the current head is Sir Fergus Barclay, Baron Ardrossan and Sheriff of Ayr.

History

A wooden castle was originally built on the site by Simon de Morville in anno domini 1140. The castle passed to Sir Richard Barclay (grandfather of the current Baron) in anno domini 1198. He used the funds available to him as Sheriff of Ayr to gradually rebuild the castle in stone. In particular, Sir Richard mined into the supporting bedrock to add a large subterranean vault, giving Ardrossan castle significant storage space in the event of a seige.
